Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A 30-year-old woman, Suchitra Mahato, was allegedly killed by her husband, Hemant Mahato, on Friday night in the Jamalpur Gram Panchayat area of South Dinajpur district. Hemant was arrested by the Hili police on charges of murder, and Suchitra's body has been sent for post-mortem. The incident has sparked widespread shock in the local community.
Suchitra and Hemant had been married for seven years and had two children. The couple lived with Hemant's elderly father and grandmother. Sources indicate that their marriage had been facing difficulties for the past two and a half years due to Suchitra’s involvement in an extramarital affair. Hemant had reportedly caught his wife on several occasions in this affair, leading to significant marital tension. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue through family discussions and a village arbitration meeting, the situation did not improve.
According to the police, on the evening of the incident, Hemant and Suchitra were preparing dinner together. Suchitra told her husband she needed to go to the bathroom, but instead, she went to a field near their home. Hemant became suspicious when she did not return after a long period and went to search for her. He found his wife in a compromising position with another man in the field. Hemant allegedly confronted the man, who fled the scene, and then attacked Suchitra with a tree branch. Suchitra was severely beaten, resulting in her death.
Following the incident, Suchitra's family filed a complaint at the Hili police station, leading to Hemant's arrest. The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the assault and death, and further legal proceedings are expected. Hemant is currently in police custody and will face charges related to murder. Investigators are also trying to gather more details regarding the extramarital affair and any prior incidents of conflict between the couple.
